'The body is asking for more time' - Plumptre reveals exactly why she was left out of Wafcon squad

Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre has broken her silence after being omitted from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon), admitting that her body needs more time to fully recover from injury.

The 28-year-old Al-Ittihad defender has been sidelined since the end of February after suffering a foot injury that required surgery on her left foot.

She has since been undergoing rehabilitation in the United Kingdom as she works towards a return to full fitness.

Plumptre, who played a crucial role in Nigeria’s historic WAFCON success, expressed her disappointment at missing the tournament but remained hopeful of representing the Super Falcons again when she is ready to compete.

In an emotional message shared on her official X handle, the defender revealed that her decision was influenced by her recovery process.

“The body is asking for more time and I’m listening,” Plumptre wrote.

The former Leicester City player admitted that missing the continental tournament was difficult but said she remained optimistic about rejoining her teammates in the future.

“Sad to be missing this WAFCON yet hopeful in the prospect of getting to fight alongside these women again with the support of Nigerians everywhere when the body is ready to compete again,” she added.

Plumptre also called on Nigerian fans to continue supporting the Super Falcons as they aim for another continental triumph.

“So, in the meantime, back these women, back them on their quest for victory once more. Go easy on them, they need you. I am with you ladies. Naija no dey carry last,” she charged.

The Super Falcons will head into the 2026 WAFCON as defending champions after securing a record-extending 10th African title. Nigeria has been drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Algeria and Botswana, with the team targeting another successful campaign on the continent.

Despite Plumptre’s absence, Nigeria will rely on its experienced squad and emerging talents as coach Justin Madugu’s side looks to maintain the country’s dominance in African women’s football.
