Done deal: Owen joins FC Utrecht as Bayer Leverkusen insert buy-back clause

With a statement on the official website, Dutch Eredivisie side FC Utrecht have confirmed the signing of Nigerian-eligible forward Emmanuel Chigozie Owen from German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen have secured a buy-back option on the talented dual-national attacker.

The 19-year-old forward has signed a contract with Utrecht until mid-2030 after the club moved to secure his services despite interest from several teams.

Born in Heilbronn, Germany, Chigozie Owen has Nigerian heritage through his parents, making him eligible to represent both Nigeria and Germany at international level.

Although he has represented Germany at Under-17 and Under-19 levels, the talented forward remains eligible to play for Nigeria.

Owen developed through Hoffenheim’s youth academy before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2024. During his time with the German club, he featured for both the Under-17 and Under-19 teams, while also gaining experience in the UEFA Youth League.

Utrecht were impressed by Owen’s ability and moved to bring him to the Netherlands as part of their plans to help him make his breakthrough at the highest level.

The youngster ultimately chose the Eredivisie side after being attracted by the club’s vision and development plans.

Speaking after completing his move, Owen expressed his excitement about joining Utrecht and revealed the qualities he hopes to contribute to the team.

“The first time I came here, it immediately felt like a warm welcome,” Chigozie Owen said from Galgenwaard Stadium. “I think I am strong on the ball and that I can contribute well physically. I am someone who is creative and loves creating chances, assists, and goals.”

“My goal is to adapt here in the Netherlands as quickly as possible. I want to play as much as possible. Whether that is with Jong Utrecht or the first team doesn't matter that much to me at the moment. I want to develop myself,” he added.

Owen’s arrival provides Utrecht with another young attacking option as the club continues to invest in emerging talents.

The forward will now focus on settling into his new environment and working towards earning more opportunities at senior level.
