Celtic near agreement to keep Nigeria striker Iheanacho after productive talks

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho is reportedly on the verge of agreeing a new contract with Scottish champions Celtic ahead of the 2026/27 season following encouraging talks between both parties, according to Football Insider.

The Nigerian forward joined the Hoops last September after terminating his contract with Spanish side Sevilla, ending a disappointing spell in La Liga.

Iheanacho initially signed a one-year deal with an option for a further year, but Celtic opted against activating the extension clause despite his influential performances during the campaign.

Although injuries disrupted parts of his debut season in Scotland, the former Leicester City forward still made a significant contribution as Celtic completed a domestic double.

Iheanacho scored several crucial goals, including a dramatic late penalty in a 3-2 away victory over Motherwell, before playing another key role in the win over Hearts that sealed the Scottish Premiership title.

His impact prompted speculation over his long-term future, with questions raised after the club declined to activate the extension option.

However, Celtic manager Martin O'Neill later confirmed that discussions were ongoing to retain the Nigerian international beyond the expiration of his current deal.

Negotiations have progressed positively in recent days, with both parties now reportedly close to reaching an agreement on fresh terms.

Celtic are said to value Iheanacho's experience, versatility and ability to deliver in decisive moments despite concerns over his recent injury record.

The Scottish champions are eager to conclude the negotiations quickly as they continue preparations for the new campaign, while also hoping to ward off interest from other European clubs monitoring the striker's situation.
