Benin 3-5 Nigeria: Joseph's hat-trick inspires Flamingoes to victory in U17 WWCq thriller

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Benin Republic 5-3 in a thrilling second-leg final qualifying encounter in Lomé, Togo.

The victory completed an impressive 8-5 aggregate triumph for Nigeria, who carried a narrow 3-2 advantage from the first leg in Ikenne into the decisive fixture.

The result also confirmed the Flamingos as one of Africa’s four automatic qualifiers for the tournament, joining hosts Morocco at the 24-team competition scheduled to take place from October 17 to November 7, 2026.

Coach Akeem Busari’s side started the game in explosive fashion, with Mary Akpan  opening the scoring in the sixth minute.

Although Benin responded quickly through Romaine Gandonou, Nigeria regained control as Esther Enne Stephen restored their lead in the 15th minute before Queen Joseph added a third four minutes later.

The Flamingos continued their attacking dominance after the break, with Queen Joseph converting from the penalty spot in the 54th minute to extend Nigeria’s advantage.

Benin fought back through Hermionne Lokossou and another Gandonou penalty, reducing the deficit and keeping their hopes alive.

However, Queen Joseph completed her outstanding performance with her third goal of the match in the 76th minute, sealing a memorable victory for Nigeria and confirming their place on the global stage.

The qualification marks another strong achievement for Nigerian women’s youth football, as the Flamingos continue their proud history in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
