Why re-signing Iheanacho could Be Celtic's smartest move after landing Camilo Duran

Celtic’s decision to bring in Camilo Duran from Qarabag represents a clear attempt to refresh their attacking options, but the club’s smartest piece of business this summer could be keeping a player who already proved his value: Kelechi Iheanacho.

The Nigerian forward arrived at Celtic as a free agent in September 2025 with plenty to prove after difficult spells at Sevilla and Middlesbrough.

However, he quickly became an important figure in Martin O’Neill’s side, delivering decisive moments when the pressure was highest.

Iheanacho’s contribution was not simply measured by his goals tally; it was about timing.

His ability to produce in crucial matches helped Celtic secure silverware, with his goals playing a major role in their successful league and cup campaign.

He was particularly influential during the final stretch of the season, scoring six goals in Celtic’s last 10 games as they completed a historic double.

One of his biggest moments came in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren, where he scored twice in extra-time to inspire Celtic’s 6-2 victory and send them into the final.

He also found the net in the Scottish Cup final victory over Dunfermline, helping the club lift another trophy.

The arrival of Duran adds pace, youth and Champions League experience to Celtic’s attack after the Colombian impressed with Qarabag, including scoring five goals in Europe’s elite competition.

But replacing Iheanacho’s experience and big-game mentality would not be easy.

At 29, Iheanacho still offers qualities that cannot be easily bought: composure in front of goal, intelligent movement and the ability to change matches from the bench.

For a club aiming to compete domestically and in Europe, having both Duran’s hunger and Iheanacho’s proven pedigree would provide the perfect balance.

Celtic have already seen what Iheanacho can deliver when fully fit.

Extending his stay may not just be a sentimental decision, it could be the move that gives them the strongest chance of defending their trophies.
