Belgian Pro League side Racing Genk have officially announced the contract extension of Nigerian defender Christian Akpan, with the versatile full-back committing his future to the club until the summer of 2030.
The announcement was confirmed in a statement released by the Belgian club, ending speculation over the 21-year-old's future after an impressive rise at the Cegeka Arena.
Akpan joined Genk in 2023 after progressing through Jong Genk and has since developed into one of the club's most dependable defensive options.
His consistent displays, versatility and work ethic have seen him establish himself as an important member of the first-team squad.
Known for his strong tackling ability, versatility, pace in transition and relentless work rate, the Nigerian defender has earned praise for his consistency and tactical discipline.
His performances reportedly attracted interest from clubs outside Belgium during the transfer window, sparking uncertainty over his future.
However, Akpan has opted to remain with Genk, choosing to continue his development with the Belgian outfit.
Reacting to the contract extension, Racing Genk's Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé, expressed his delight at securing the defender's long-term future.
"We are delighted that Christian has decided to extend his stay with our club. His versatility makes him an incredibly valuable player for the coaching staff," Dimitri said.
The Genk football chief also highlighted the tactical flexibility Akpan offers the team.
"Players like Christian give coaches the flexibility to adapt during matches whenever needed," says Head of Football Dimitri de Condé," he concluded.
Akpan's rapid development at club level has also been recognised on the international stage.
His impressive performances earned him a maiden call-up to the Super Eagles, and he made his senior Nigeria debut in the international friendly defeat to Portugal in June.
With his future now secured until 2030, Akpan will be aiming to build on his impressive progress, cement his place in Genk's starting lineup and continue his development as one of Nigeria's promising defensive talents.
