Rangers confirm signing of new centre-back amid Fernandez exit rumours

Scottish Premiership side Rangers have confirmed the signing of English central defender Ben Godfrey from Atalanta, a move that could pave the way for the departure of Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez this summer.

Fernandez enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Ibrox after joining the club from Peterborough United last summer.

The Nigerian centre-back scored six goals in 33 appearances across all competitions and quickly established himself as one of Rangers' standout performers.

His impressive displays have reportedly attracted interest from several European clubs, including Premier League sides Arsenal, West Ham United, French outfit Rennes, and Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Despite the absence of an official bid, Rangers' decision to sign Ben Godfrey from Atalanta could signal their willingness to allow Fernandez to leave the club during the current summer transfer window.

Rangers announced Godfrey's arrival in an official statement on the club's website, confirming that the former Everton defender has joined on loan to strengthen manager Derek McInnes' squad ahead of the new season.

The addition of the England international significantly boosts the club's defensive options and could give Rangers the flexibility to sanction Fernandez's departure during the current transfer window.

The increased competition in the defensive department has raised doubts over Fernandez's long-term future at Ibrox, with the club expected to assess potential offers for the Nigerian in the coming weeks as they continue reshaping their squad for the upcoming campaign.

Should a suitable bid arrive, Rangers may be prepared to cash in on one of their most valuable assets this summer.
