Super Eagles centre-back Jordan Torunarigha has revealed the personal inspiration behind his decision to wear the No.23 jersey at German club Hamburger SV, explaining that the number represents his admiration for basketball legend Michael Jordan.
The HSV defender secured the famous shirt number ahead of the new season after Albert Grönbaek switched from No.23 to No.11 following his permanent move to the club.
Torunarigha’s choice of No.23 is more than just a squad number, as the Nigerian international was named after the NBA icon and has grown up inspired by his achievements and mentality.
The 28-year-old explained that the opportunity to carry Michael Jordan’s name on his back is a source of pride and motivation.
Speaking to HSV’s official website, Torunarigha highlighted the influence the basketball superstar has had on him, saying: “Michael Jordan is one of my idols. My father was a huge fan of his. It's an honor for me to be able to wear this name on my back.”
The defender added that wearing the number gives him extra confidence and that he wants to replicate the competitive spirit associated with the six-time NBA champion.
“It makes me feel even more confident. I want to embody the same attitude as Michael Jordan – giving my all and leading the way,” he said.
Torunarigha previously wore the No.23 shirt during his time with Belgian side KAA Gent, where his jersey featured his first name, Jordan, instead of his surname.
HSV confirmed that he will again have Jordan displayed on his back as he continues his career in Germany.
