'I'm definitely pursuing that' - Martin O'Neill confirms Celtic in talks to re-sign Iheanacho

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has shared an update on the future of Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho, stressing that the Hoops are in discussion with the Nigerian forward over a return to the club ahead of the upcoming 2026/2027 campaign.

Iheanacho joined the Scottish champions as a free agent last summer following the termination of his contract at Sevilla.

The former Leicester City striker signed a one-year deal with an option to extend his stay.

Despite the option, Celtic failed to activate the extension before its expiration this summer, even after the Nigerian played a key role in the club's domestic double-winning campaign.

Iheanacho scored several important and match-winning goals during the run-in, including a late penalty that secured a dramatic 3-2 away victory over Motherwell.

Addressing the striker's future via Celtic Way, O'Neill admitted the club is keen to complete a deal as quickly as possible to allow Iheanacho to enjoy a full pre-season.

"I'd like to do something with him," O'Neill said of Iheanacho. "If we can do something relatively quickly, at least he then gets started in pre-season, which is really important for him. It's something he didn't have last year.

"So that would be nice. I'm definitely pursuing that at this minute. He won't be in Portugal with us, but we are talking to his agent now at this moment. I would like to have him."

However, following the expiration of his contract, the Nigerian international has been linked with moves to several European clubs, including Turkish side Bursaspor.

Ahead of the start of the new campaign, Iheanacho will be keen to resolve his future and continue the impressive form he displayed during his spell with the Scottish champions.
