Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has named Mbekezile Mbokazi as South Africa's standout performer despite Bafana Bafana's 1-0 defeat to the Canada men's national soccer team in the Round of 32 of the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
The Chicago Fire FC defender delivered a commanding display at the heart of South Africa's backline, frustrating the Canadians for much of the contest before Stephen Eustáquio struck late to seal Canada's place in the Round of 16.
Speaking during his analysis on SuperSport, as monitored by allnigeriasoccer.com, Ekong singled out the young defender as Bafana Bafana's standout performer on the night.
“I think it says a lot to say that Mbokazi [Mbekezile] was the best player on the South Africa side. I think Okon also spent a lot of time on the ball,” Ekong said.
Ekong added that South Africa had opportunities in the final 30 minutes of the second half when they became more attack-minded, but their decision to wait and see what would happen in extra time ultimately cost them the game.
“I think in the second half there were opportunities towards the last half hour, they opened up to be a little more attacking minded.”
“They are waiting to see what will happen in extra time and I think that cost them today,” he revealed.
The former Nigerian International also believes Mbokazi's move to Chicago Fire FC from Orlando Pirates during the winter transfer window has accelerated his development ahead of the World Cup.
“The step-up for him to the MLS has helped to continue his development in a year that is a World Cup year,” he added.
“It makes sure that he is playing and I think after this tournament, he can look back and see this is what he learned.”
The defeat brought South Africa's World Cup campaign to an end, while Canada advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the clash between Morocco and the Netherlands.
