Confirmed: Golden Eaglets hopeful signs new deal with Newcastle United

Newcastle United have announced that eight teenagers have signed scholarships at the club's Little Benton Academy ahead of the 2026/27 season, with a Nigerian midfielder part of the group.

Two years ago, allnigeriasoccer.com exclusively reported that Chukwudi Afumuzor had signed a two-year schoolboy contract with Newcastle United and was expected to follow it up with a two-year scholarship once his schoolboy registration expired.

The Magpies have confirmed that Afumuzor will join the club on a fulltime basis after leaving school this summer.

Afumuzor, who spent eight years at Portsmouth before joining Newcastle United in 2024, has expressed his willingness to represent the Golden Eaglets if approached by the Nigeria Football Federation.

Predominantly a box-to-box midfielder, the youngster has already made his debut for Newcastle United in the U18 Premier League, featuring in the closing minutes of a 4-2 loss to Everton back in March.

He is now set to make additional appearances for the U18s in the forthcoming season as he will link up with Chris Moore's Ui8 squad on a permanent basis.

Afumuzor has earned a reputation as an energetic box-to-box midfielder capable of contributing effectively in both defence and attack.

His playing style has seen him likened to Nigeria international and Manchester City academy product Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
