German 2. Bundesliga side SpVgg Greuther Fürth have confirmed the signing of Nigeria-eligible striker Benjamin Zank from Viktoria Köln following his impressive performances in the 3. Liga last season.
The highly-rated attacker completed the move after enjoying a breakthrough campaign with Viktoria Köln, where he scored five goals and registered three assists in 31 league appearances, establishing himself as one of the division's promising young forwards.
Zank's performances attracted interest from several clubs across Germany, but Greuther Fürth ultimately won the race for his signature, handing him a contract that will keep him at the club until 2029.
The transfer represents another significant step in the young forward’s development, with the German-Nigerian set to continue his progress in the 2. Bundesliga once he returns to full fitness.
Greuther Fürth sporting director Daniel Meyer expressed his delight after completing the deal, revealing that the club had monitored the striker for an extended period.
“I’ve been following Benjamin’s career for a long time. He has an incredibly exciting profile and immediately made a name for himself in the 3. Liga last season,” Meyer said.
“Despite his knee injury, he had numerous offers from higher-division clubs. We see his decision to join Greuther Fürth as a testament to our approach.”
“His physique and athleticism give him a strong presence and dynamism. His development over the past few years has been remarkable because he has worked hard for every step of the way. We need that kind of mentality here as well.”
Although Zank is currently recovering from a knee injury, Greuther Fürth remained confident in his long-term potential.
The club confirmed that he will continue his rehabilitation throughout preseason before being integrated into the first-team squad once he is medically cleared.
While the move offers the Nigerian-eligible forward an opportunity to test himself at a higher level, Greuther Fürth will hope Zank can build on the promise he displayed in the 3. Liga and become an important part of their plans in the coming seasons.
