From Iwobi's vlogs to Bassey's meditation: Eric Chelle shares Super Eagles players' pre-match habits

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has opened up on the different personalities within Nigeria’s squad, revealing how players adopt unique routines and mindsets when preparing for matches.

The Franco-Malian tactician, in a conversation with Algerian influencer Riadh Belaïche, explained that while some players need several days to mentally prepare before a fixture, others remain relaxed and composed until the final moments before kick-off.

Chelle revealed that some members of the squad become increasingly focused as matchday approaches, choosing to stay away from distractions and concentrate fully on the task ahead.

"You have some on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; they are kidding. Starting on Wednesday, not a sign, not a word. These guys, they are in their own thing. They need three days," Eric Chelle said to Algerian influencer Just Riadh.

However, the Super Eagles coach highlighted Alex Iwobi as a player who brings a different energy to the team environment, describing the midfielder as someone who combines a positive personality with his professional approach.

"Then you have some players. You have Alex Iwobi. That guy is good; he is always smiling as he makes his vlogs. Great guy. Before a match, you see him in the locker room, the guy's there laughing," Chelle said.

While Iwobi embraces a more cheerful approach before games, Chelle explained that Calvin Bassey follows a quieter and more reflective routine.

The defender, according to the coach, prefers to create his own space before matches, using meditation and music to help him focus before taking to the pitch.

"Then there is Calvin Bassey. He's a bit like Alex, except that in the locker room, he goes into a corner and meditates. He closes his eyes, puts on the headphones. He concentrates, and you have others who need three days," Chelle added.
