Former Nigeria U23 forward finds the net for Canada in World Cup defeat to Switzerland

Switzerland secured a narrow 2–1 victory over Canada in their final Group B game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BC Place, Vancouver, to conclude a tightly contested encounter.

Former Nigeria U23 forward Promise David was on the scoresheet for Canada in the defeat, continuing his growing reputation on the international stage.

David, who previously represented Nigeria at U23 level before switching allegiance to Canada at senior level, struck in the 76th minute to reduce the deficit and spark hopes of a late comeback for the co-hosts.

Switzerland had taken control of the match early in the second half. Ruben Vargas opened the scoring in the 46th minute with a composed finish after a slick attacking move, giving the Swiss a 1–0 advantage.

They doubled their lead in the 57th minute when Johan Manzambi calmly converted from close range after being set up by Breel Embolo, putting Switzerland firmly in control at 2–0.

Canada responded strongly in the final half-hour, increasing attacking pressure through Jonathan David and Tajon Buchanan, while substitute Promise David made an immediate impact.

His well-timed run and composed finish inside the box cut the deficit to 2–1, energising the Canadian side for a late push.

Despite sustained pressure in the closing stages, Switzerland’s defensive organisation and goalkeeper Gregor Kobel’s key interventions ensured they held firm. Canada came close through set pieces and aerial threats but could not find an equaliser.

The result saw Switzerland finish their group campaign on a strong note as Group B winners, while Canada ended as Group B runners-up but still progressed to the next phase of the tournament, keeping their World Cup ambitions alive on home soil.
