Confirmed: Former Flying Eagles invitee released by Premier League new boys Ipswich Town

Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town have announced their retained and released list ahead of preparations for the 2026–2027 campaign, with the club confirming decisions on the futures of five Nigerian players alongside Lagos-born Republic of Ireland international Chiedozie Ogbene.

At academy level, former Flying Eagles invitee Abube Onuchukwu is among those released by the Tractor Boys. two years after joining the club from Aston Villa.

A box-to-box midfielder, Onuchukwu leaves Ipswich Town without making a senior appearance for the newly promoted Premier League side, although he was a key figure for their development squad, featuring in both the Premier League 2 and the Premier League Cup.

In search of first team opportunities, the 20-year-old was loaned out to non-league clubs Chelmsford City, Billericay Town and Wingate & Finchley last season.

Elsewhere, forwards Jackson Nsofor and Will Unadike have been released, with Nsofor having spent part of last season on loan at Cambridge City, while Unadike gained first-team experience during spells at Lowestoft Town and Heybridge Swifts.

Ipswich Town have also confirmed the permanent signing of Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom from Ajax Amsterdam, following his loan spell in which he scored two goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.

Tudor Mendel-Idowu has also been retained, with Ipswich exercising the option to extend his contract, while Ogbene has returned to the club after a season-long loan spell with Sheffield United.
