'Good to go' - Rangers boss confirms Super Eagles centre-back's return to training after knee complaint

New Rangers manager Derek McInnes has confirmed that Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has returned to full training as the Scottish club stepped up preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United, enjoyed an outstanding debut campaign, scoring six goals in 33 appearances across all competitions.

The Nigerian centre-back had been managing a minor knee complaint but has now been cleared to resume training with the rest of the squad.

Speaking to Rangers TV, McInnes expressed delight over the defender's return while stressing the importance of keeping his squad injury-free during pre-season

"Equally at the same time, we don't want to pick up any injuries and have players missing a few sessions," McInnes said. "So we're getting Big Manny (Fernandez) back today, doing his first work with the team."

"He's been doing a bit of work with a wee knee complaint, but he's fine and good to go now. We're now just looking at what the players are going to give us, but their effort has been there."

Fernandez's return comes amid growing speculation over his future following an impressive first season in Scotland.

The Nigeria international has reportedly attracted interest from several European clubs, including Rennes, Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray.

Despite the transfer rumours, McInnes will be hoping to retain the highly rated defender as Rangers continue preparations for the new campaign.
