Fernandez to work with new coach as Danny Rohl leaves Rangers by mutual consent

Super Eagles centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez will work under a new coach at Rangers following the departure of Danny Röhl, who has left the club by mutual consent.

The official website of the Light Blues confirmed on Wednesday morning that the German football tactician has made the move to Austrian Bundesliga powerhouse Red Bull Salzburg, adding that first-team performance manager, Sascha Lense and first-team analyst, Tristan Steiner have also departed.

Röhl previously served as an assistant coach to Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich and with the German national team, and also held assistant managerial roles at Southampton and RB Leipzig under Ralph Hasenhüttl.

The 37-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Red Bull Salzburg and will take charge of his first training session on Wednesday, June 17.

Fernandez flourished under Röhl, scoring five goals in 31 all-competition appearances, which earned him a maiden call-up to the Super Eagles.

However, the future of the Nigeria international is now shrouded in uncertainty following the departure of the German coach, with the centre-back attracting interest from Premier League and Bundesliga clubs this summer.

Fernandez was named Rangers Men's Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season and included in the PFA Premiership Team of the Year following an outstanding campaign.
