Brighton interested in Atalanta's Super Eagles-eligible centre-back after Italy debut

Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion  are reportedly interested in signing Super Eagles-eligible defender Honest Ahanor from Atalanta during the summer transfer window.

Ahanor, who joined Atalanta in the summer of 2025, enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at the Gewiss Stadium, establishing himself as one of the club's promising young defenders.

The centre-back impressed with his composure, defensive solidity and maturity at the heart of Atalanta's backline, attracting interest from international selectors.

The defender's rise also earned him international recognition after acquiring Italian citizenship and accepting his first call-up to the Italy Under-21 side in March 2026.

He subsequently made his senior debut for Italy national football team on June 3, 2026, when interim head coach Silvio Baldini handed him his first appearance in a friendly against Luxembourg national football team.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Brighton have already made enquiries about the availability of the highly-rated defender, although the Seagulls are yet to submit an official bid to the Bergamo-based club.

Brighton are in the market for a new central defender following the departure of Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who recently joined Tottenham Hotspur  to reunite with former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

However, any move for Ahanor is expected to be complicated, with Atalanta determined to retain the young defender as they view him as an important part of their long-term project ahead of the new season.
