'We are open' - Werder Bremen chief provides update on Agu's long-term future

Bundesliga side Werder Bremen have expressed their willingness to retain Nigerian defender Felix Agu beyond his current contract, with club chief Peter Niemeyer confirming that the club remains open to discussions over a new deal.

Agu, whose existing contract at the Weserstadion runs until the summer of 2027, endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign due to a series of injury setbacks that significantly limited his involvement for the German outfit.

The 26-year-old fullback spent almost four months on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury at the beginning of October.

Following his return, Agu was further hampered by muscular problems towards the latter stages of the season, preventing him from establishing a consistent run in the team.

As a result, the Super Eagles defender managed just eleven Bundesliga appearances during the campaign as Bremen successfully preserved their top-flight status.

His limited playing time, recurring fitness concerns, and ongoing contract situation have sparked speculation regarding his long-term future at the club.

However, speaking to DeichStube, Bremen's head of professional football Peter Niemeyer indicated that the club would welcome the opportunity to extend Agu's stay.

"There haven't been any further talks so far, but we are generally open to a contract extension," Niemeyer disclosed.

Despite the club's willingness to keep Agu beyond his current deal, formal discussions over a contract extension have yet to begin.

While the last round of discussions occurred in the winter, both Agu's representatives and Werder Bremen remain open to holding fresh talks over his future during the summer months.
