'There were three things' – Owen Oseni reveals Chelle's key instructions at Unity Cup

Plymouth Argyle forward Owen Oseni has shed light on the tactical instructions given by head coach Eric Chelle during Nigeria’s dominant run at the Unity Cup, where the Super Eagles defeated Jamaica 3-0 in the final to retain the title at The Valley.

Oseni, who was an unused substitute in the final, said the coach kept the game plan straightforward, emphasizing quick transitions and efficiency in attack.

According to him, Chelle outlined three key instructions to the players ahead of the match.

“There were three things that the manager wanted from us and they were very simple things,” Oseni told Proudly Austin after the game. “Just pass and move and when you get inside the box finish it off.”

He added that the squad was well-prepared in training and encouraged to express themselves on the pitch, noting that the approach helped reduce pressure and allowed the team to play with more freedom.

“Obviously in training we work on a lot of different things and we have our own methods and formations,” he said.

“Today {on Saturday}, the boys were just enjoying themselves and took a lot of pressure from the game.”

Oseni, who made his debut against Zimbabwe, also expressed pride in representing Nigeria, describing his involvement with the squad as a big honour.

“It is a massive pleasure where my father is from and playing for all these people here is a massive honour,” Oseni revealed.

He said his primary objective was to enjoy his time with the Super Eagles and help the team win the trophy.

“The big goal was number one to come and enjoy myself at the Super Eagles and come and take the trophy. Obviously, I managed to do both so I am very pleased,” Oseni stated.

The young forward further explained the expectations within the team, stressing that they possess the quality and personnel needed to consistently meet those ambitions.

“It is a team whereby they just want to succeed, where everyone knows that we are the best in Africa, and we have shown here today.”

“The expectation of this team is very much being the best team in Africa and we know we have the qualities and players to do it,” he concluded.

The 23-year-old earned his Super Eagles call-up after an impressive spell with Plymouth, where he scored ten goals and registered five assists in 33 appearances.
