Super Eagles central defender becomes a father ahead of Unity Cup final

Super Eagles central defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has welcomed a baby girl with his wife, Melissa, ahead of Nigeria's Unity Cup final clash against Jamaica on Saturday.

Turkish club Trabzonspor confirmed the development in a statement published on its official website, congratulating the Nigerian defender and revealing the name of the newborn child.

“We wholeheartedly congratulate Chibuike Nwaiwu on the joy of becoming a father and wish their little one, whom they named Jacinta, a healthy and happy life,” the club said.

The joyous moment comes at a crucial stage for the defender, who is currently with the Super Eagles squad preparing for the final of the Unity Cup in London.

Nwaiwu featured for the entire duration of Nigeria’s 2-0 semifinal victory over Zimbabwe, producing another composed performance at the heart of the defence.

The former Enyimba defender enjoyed an impressive campaign with Trabzonspor following his winter move from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC.

The 22-year-old quickly established himself as an important figure for the Turkish club, contributing significantly both defensively and offensively as Trabzonspor secured the Turkish Cup title.

His consistent performances throughout the season earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles, where he is expected to play a key role in the final against Jamaica at The Valley.

Nigeria will be aiming to successfully defend the Unity Cup title and secure another victory over the Reggae Boyz in London.

The Super Eagles claimed the 2025 edition of the tournament after defeating Jamaica 5-4 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw in regulation time.
