The Super Falcons claimed a 2–1 victory over Senegal's Lionesses in an international friendly at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, after a strong first-half performance and a late scare in the closing stages as both sides continue preparations for Wafcon 2026.
Nigeria started the match with intent, dominating possession and pressing high up the pitch to disrupt Senegal’s build-up play.
Their early control eventually paid off in the 32nd minute when Asisat Oshoala broke the deadlock, converting from the penalty spot after sustained pressure forced a defensive lapse inside the box.
The hosts doubled their advantage in the 41st minute through Toni Payne, who finished off a flowing attacking move with composure.
Payne’s goal capped an impressive first-half display from Nigeria, with the midfield linking smoothly and creating consistent openings in the final third.
Senegal struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity in the opening period, finding it difficult to progress the ball through midfield against a well-organised Super Falcons press.
Despite occasional attempts forward, they were largely contained and went into the break trailing 2–0.
In the second half, Senegal showed greater urgency and gradually grew into the game, testing Nigeria’s defensive structure more consistently.
The Super Falcons, however, remained disciplined and looked in control for long spells while managing the tempo effectively.
The visitors eventually pulled one back in the 87th minute, capitalising on a rare lapse in concentration from the Nigerian defence to set up a tense finish.
Despite the late goal, Nigeria held firm in the closing moments to secure the win.
The fixture forms part of a double-header between both sides, with another meeting scheduled for June 8, also in Ikenne, as both nations fine-tune their squads ahead of Wafcon 2026 in Morocco, set to take place from 25 July to 16 August 2026.
