Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu will undergo a medical scan in Lisbon on Monday after suffering an injury ahead of Nigeria’s international friendly against Portugal, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Slavia Prague centre-back picked up the injury during the Super Eagles’ training session on Saturday evening as Eric Chelle’s side intensified preparations for the high-profile clash against the Portuguese national team.
Despite concerns over his condition, Ogbu has remained with the squad in Lisbon, contrary to reports suggesting he had already returned to the Czech Republic.
Team officials confirmed after Sunday evening’s training session that 22 players took part in the workout, while Ogbu stayed with the camp for further medical evaluation.
The defender is now expected to undergo scans on Monday to determine the full extent of the injury.
Initial reports from within the national team setup indicated fears that the 26-year-old may have suffered an Achilles tendon problem, although the exact diagnosis will only be confirmed after the scheduled examination in Lisbon.
Ogbu has become an increasingly important figure in the Super Eagles squad following his performances for Czech champions Slavia Prague.
The former Gombe United defender has enjoyed a steady rise in European football, previously featuring for Norwegian clubs Rosenborg, Sogndal and Lillestrom before establishing himself in Prague.
His possible absence would represent another setback for head coach Chelle, who is already without several key stars for the Portugal encounter.
Nigeria are preparing for a difficult test against Roberto Martinez’s side, with Portugal expected to parade several top players during the friendly.
