Poland central defender Przemysław Wiśniewski has explained why he only raised his hands following his late equaliser in Wednesday night’s 2-2 draw with Nigeria in Warsaw, saying the moment came too quickly for a planned celebration.
Wiśniewski struck a long-range effort in the closing minutes to beat Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and cancel out Paul Onuachu’s penalty, earning Poland a draw in a tightly contested international friendly.
The goal marked his first for the national team since making his debut against the Netherlands in September 2025 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Speaking after the match, the defender admitted that the low key celebration was due to fatigue and surprise at the strike’s execution.
“I didn’t have a planned celebration because I don’t score often,” he told reporters via Przegladsportowy. “I just hit it and it went in - pure instinct.”
The 27-year-old added that the physical demands of the closing stages also influenced his reaction.
“I was tired in the 90th minute, so I wasn’t going to run around; I just raised my hands. I’m happy that I scored such a first goal.”
Wiśniewski also expressed uncertainty about replicating such a moment in the future, noting that he does not regularly attempt similar shots in training.
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to repeat it in the near future. I don’t score shots like that in training,” he noted.
The Super Eagles will be aiming for a stronger performance as they take on Portugal in their next international friendly.
