Former Nigeria-eligible player Chukwuemeka set to represent Austria at 2026 World Cup

Carney Chukwuemeka was born in Vienna to Nigerian parents but moved to Northampton as a child. However, the 22-year-old decided to switch nations late in the day to force a call-up to the World Cup 2026 festivities. Having never been capped by England at the senior level, this loophole in national intelligence law allowed Chukwuemeka to switch to Austria.

FIFA officially approved his change in nationality back in March, just two months ago, and three months before the World Cup starts in June. That change allowed him to make his senior debut for Austria against Ghana on March 27 after coming on as a substitute. Chukwuemeka only played the final 29 minutes but netted his first goal for his new nation to announce himself.

Chukwuemeka later went on to make another substitute appearance on March 31 when he came off the bench in the 88th minute against South Korea. And he must have impressed Austria manager Ralf Rangnick with those two substitute cameos, as he has been called into their World Cup squad.

He will now represent Austria at the tournament, which takes place across the USA, Mexico, and Canada. It will be their first appearance at the tournament since 1998. With the Super Eagles missing the 2026 World Cup, football-obsessed Nigerians will turn to their mobile phones for non-stop coverage of Nigerian players like Chukwuemeka on social media.

Chukwuemeka's Talent Is on the Global Stage

Chukwuemeka has more than lived up to the billing this season for Dortmund. You can argue that his breakout came with his switch to international allegiance. Signed last summer in a £24 million deal after a year's loan from Chelsea, the attacking midfielder has burst into form this season.

In 28 Bundesliga outings this season, he has played over 900 minutes, which is more than any other senior season so far. He has scored two league goals and one Champions League goal across his eight European appearances in that competition. He also has two assists in the Champions League this term. Overall, he played 38 times for Dortmund across all competitions this term.

Austria Makes it Back to the Tournament

Austria will be up against Lionel Messi and Argentina, as they have been drawn in Group J alongside the World Cup holders, Algeria and Jordan. They will kick things off against Jordan on June 17, before facing the 2022 champions on June 22 in their second match.

Algeria will be Austria's final opponents in the group stage when they meet on June 28. Joining Chukwuemeka in Austria's squad is former Chelsea and West Ham winger Marko Arnautovic.

The 37-year-old is his country's record cap-holder with 132 and will be hoping to add to that total this summer. David Alaba has also been named despite long-term injury problems, along with former Man United midfielder Marcel Sabitzer.

Kevin Danso will also represent Austria after joining the side from Tottenham, along with Bayern Munich star Konrad Laimer. In his selection news, Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick said this about having Chukwuemeka on the roster:

"With Carney Chukwuemeka, we have a dribbling, skillful player who scores important goals from wide areas."
