Five takeaways from Super Eagles' thrilling draw against two-time World Cup bronze winners

The Super Eagles were twice pegged back in Warsaw as they played out a 2-2 draw against two-time World Cup bronze winners Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium.

Terem Moffi gave Nigeria the lead with a simple tap-in after a well-delivered cross from Moses Simon.

However, the hosts restored parity late in the first half when Kacper Potulski slotted home after Nigeria failed to clear their lines.

Nigeria regained the advantage in the second half through Paul Onuachu, who converted from the penalty spot. But Przemysław Wiśniewski struck with virtually the last kick of the game to salvage a draw for Poland.

Okoye produces brilliant saves to deny Lewandowski

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye delivered an outstanding performance in the second half, producing a series of fine saves to keep Robert Lewandowski off the scoresheet.

The Udinese shot-stopper first came to Nigeria's rescue after a misplaced back pass from Zaidu Sanusi gifted the Polish captain a sight of goal. Okoye reacted brilliantly to deny the Barcelona striker with a superb save.

Moments later, he was called into action again, making another excellent stop from close range after Lewandowski connected with a dangerous delivery into the box.

Okoye's heroics frustrated the former Bayern Munich forward, whose irritation became increasingly evident as the game wore on.

Lewandowski's frustration boiled over in the second half during a heated exchange with Raphael Onyedika as Nigeria's defence continued to limit his influence in the final third.

Bewene impresses on Super Eagles debut

Abdullahi Bewene enjoyed an impressive debut for the Super Eagles after being handed a starting role in the absence of a recognised right-back.

The 21-year-old produced a solid defensive display while also providing an attacking outlet down the flank.

His composure, energy, and willingness to support forward play made him one of Nigeria's standout performers on the night.

VAR decisions spark controversy in Warsaw

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) was at the centre of two major incidents that generated debate during the international friendly in Warsaw.

Poland were first denied a penalty in the opening half after Karol Świderski went down inside the box following a challenge from Frank Onyeka.

The Nigerian midfielder appeared to make contact with the Polish forward after clearing the ball, prompting strong appeals from the home players, coaching staff, and supporters.

However, referee Marian Barbu waved away the protests, ruling that Onyeka had fairly won the ball and committed no foul.

Nigeria later benefited from a VAR intervention in the second half when the officials reviewed a handball incident inside the Polish penalty area.

Nicola Zalewski was adjudged to have handled the ball while attempting to challenge Wilfred Ndidi.

Although the referee initially allowed play to continue, VAR recommended a review, after which Barbu pointed to the spot. Paul Onuachu calmly converted the resulting penalty to give the Super Eagles the decisive advantage.

Dominant first-half display from Nigeria

The Super Eagles produced a commanding and dominant performance against Poland during the opening half of the encounter at the PGE Narodowy Stadium.

Nigeria controlled possession, dictated the tempo, and created the better scoring opportunities as they kept the hosts under sustained pressure for much of the half.

Although Poland found an equaliser in the closing stages of the first period, the Super Eagles were clearly the superior side and deservedly went into the break as the better team on the pitch.

Debut goals for Poland

Potulski Kacper scored his maiden goal for Poland during their 2-1 defeat to Nigeria at the PGE Narodowy Stadium.

The youngster reacted quickest to a rebound after Nicola Zalewski's effort was saved, slotting the ball home to level the score for the hosts in the first half.

Przemyslaw Wisniewski also opened his international goal account, finding the net with a stunning long-range strike deep into stoppage time. His powerful effort beat Maduka Okoye and secured a late equaliser for Poland.
