Eric Chelle wants to check out Rangers CB again, receives invitation letter for Unity Cup

Allnigeriasoccer.com can report with certainty that Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has handed Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez another invitation for the Unity Cup tournament as he continues to assess the centre-back’s qualities within the national team setup.

Fernandez, who joined Rangers from Peterborough United, earned his maiden call-up to the Nigerian national team in March for the international friendly matches against Jordan and Iran.

The young defender quickly made a strong impression during his first appearance with the Super Eagles setup.

He made his debut in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran before scoring his first international goal on his full debut against Jordan a few days later.

His composed performances at the heart of the defence are understood to have convinced Chelle to hand him another opportunity with the senior national team.

The latest invitation is expected to give the Super Eagles coach another chance to closely assess Fernandez’s qualities, within the squad as Nigeria continue efforts to rebuild the team.

Nigeria are among the four nations set to participate in the Unity Cup tournament scheduled to hold later this month at The Valley, the home ground of Charlton Athletic in London.

The Super Eagles will take on Zimbabwe in the opening semi-final on May 26, while the other semi-final fixture will see India battle Jamaica for a place in the final.
